Creative Writing 1: Developing Style, Impact, and Voice

*Please note, enrollment in this course requires completion of the Writing In-Action introductory lesson.

This 8-week course focuses on furthering the foundations of writing in-action and avoiding exposition.  We approach the matter by working on drafts and revisions of 3 separate pieces:

Weeks 1-4: Narrative Prose

It’s probably the first thing that many students think about when the words “creative writing” are used: telling a story!  So we start there.  During these lessons, students will be introduced to techniques for planning a story as a breakdown of scenes with a goal, rather than trying to make up “what happens next.”

Weeks 5-6: Targeted Piece

Here, we explore another style of creative writing: poetry, song-writing, journalism, play scripts or screenplays, blogging, critique, etc.  Students will explore a different avenue of using language for effect, taking the skills we’ve introduced in a new direction!

Weeks 7-8: 5-Paragraph Essay

That’s right!  While most of the writing assignments done for academics are, in fact, creative – we tend to treat them as expository reports!  Here, students will learn to incorporate the creative techniques we’ve practiced into “boring old schoolwork” as well, energizing their writing and going for some Wow! points.

This course is an exploration of the core tool set for a creative writer.  We’re not too interested in “finishing” a completed piece, but rather learning the process of revision.  Writing is never done on the first pass, and like an athlete, writers need to learn to hone their technique.  Students will gain a new awareness of using language to develop impact.
