Creative Writing 2: Completing an Arc

*Please, be aware that enrollment in this course requires the completion of Creative Writing 1.

Our second 8-week course is available for students who are interested in pursuing a completed piece.  As a prerequisite for the course, students should prepare a completed treatment and have that ready to go before our very first lesson!  We’ll hit the ground running!  Learners are welcome to use stories that they began in Creative Writing 1, something they’ve been working on in their own time, or they can come up with a brand new idea!

Weeks 1-3: Beginnings…

We’ll take a more in depth look at the structure of literary pieces and how to connect scenes together to create a clear pathway from beginning, through the middle, and on to the climax and ending of a piece.  We’ll base our first draft on a common and reliable structure (though students are free to explore and experiment if other ideas occur to them!)

Secondly, we’ll ensure that we properly establish our story, introduce the main theme, and get our readers hooked and anchored in our worlds!

Each week, students should expect to revise what they’ve written so far and move forward with a draft of their next scene.  This will be a lot of writing!  Our goal is to get all the way to “The End!”

Weeks 4-6: Words, Words, Words!

Students will engage in class and with their peers to begin building their scenes.  Special attention will be taken throughout to ensure that the stories are written in-action and that exposition is avoided wherever possible.

We’ll also pay special attention to common pitfalls that can affect even well-written pieces: plot holes, cliche, on-the-nose moments, continuity errors, and so forth.

Weeks 7-8: Resolution

Here, we’ll learn about punching climaxes!  We always want to ensure that climactic moments are balanced between impact and subtlety, and that the reader is clear on the message the story is sending.  This will be where we reach our goal, and where many students will be able to work with a completed draft of a story (beginning, middle, and end) for the very first time.
